The Grade 6 Outbound activities were indeed one of a kind!
To start the day, the students learned about coral reefs with Coralyfe instructor and marine biologist Mr. Andy. They then snorkeled to observe the different corals found in Koh Yawasam and identify which ones were healthy and unhealthy.
The next day, the grade 6 students assembled their coral nurseries and coated them with cement to prevent rusting underwater. Next, they followed our diving-certified teachers, Mr. Wilf and Mr. Javier, along with Coralyfe Dive Instructor, Mr. Jai, to look for corals that they could use to propagate on their nurseries.
Collecting corals, breaking them into smaller pieces, and securing them on the nurseries was a delicate process. The students had to do it as quickly as possible to lessen the stress that corals experience during the process. They then assisted the teachers and instructors in putting the coral nurseries on the sea bed.
It was indeed an unforgettable experience knowing that we not only learned about corals but also got to try first-hand how to care for them. Huge thanks to the Coralyfe team and our D-PREP teachers. We can’t wait to see the corals propagate and grow on the nurseries!
